Honesty is the cheapest path
In Maestro's learning activities, being wrong is deliberately made costless and instantly instructive. Once that is true, cheating has no economic logic — the incentive to outsource simply evaporates.
The principle
In the learning activities of a course — the practice, the try-it moments, the formative interactives — being wrong is deliberately made costless and instantly instructive. The moment a learner answers, they learn, and a wrong answer sets them back nothing.
Once that is true, cheating has no economic logic. Screenshotting a practice question into ChatGPT costs effort and time to obtain an answer that was already free to get wrong — and getting it wrong would have taught the learner the thing on the spot. The incentive to outsource simply evaporates.
Why outsource an answer that's cheaper to get wrong?
An activity where being wrong costs nothing and teaches instantly gives zero incentive to screenshot into ChatGPT.
The crucial distinction
This is not the evidence-check integrity story. Two different mechanisms protect two different layers.
Evidence checks
Higher-stakes and diagnostic. Their integrity is protected by a different mechanism — per-learner variation, tasks that ask for what only the learner knows, and the wider defense model.
Learning activities
Not defended at all. Integrity there isn't guarded — it's designed out of existence. Error is cheap and it teaches, so honesty is the path of least resistance.
Why it matters
This is the truest possible expression of companion, not policeman. In practice there is literally nothing to guard against, because the design removed the reason to cheat. The student isn't trusted despite the risk — the risk was engineered away.
That is a far stronger claim than “we can detect cheating.” It says: in your learning, there is nothing to police.
Two places it lives
- For students. Reframes integrity as: why would you cheat something that's free to get wrong and teaches you instantly? Disarming, and it lands.
- For educators and SMEs. It is an authoring instruction: design each activity so that error is cheap and immediately instructive. Integrity in practice is achieved by design, not surveillance.
One line
In Maestro's learning layer, honesty is simply the cheapest path — so there is nothing to police.
