Dichotomous right-or-wrong scoring throws away most of the information in a response. Maestro captures four signals on each one, so a lucky guess and a solid grasp never look the same.

What the learner actually answered — the item outcome itself.

The thinking that led there, elicited and read as evidence.

How sure they were — calibration between confidence and correctness.

How they got there: response time, revisions, the path taken.
Not every wrong answer means the same thing.
Diagnosis before remediation: the engine separates a secure grasp from a fragile one, a knowledge gap from an honest “not sure”, and both from a confidently held misconception — and routes each one differently. Those five results are internal. Learners never see the engine’s words, only a plain one: Solid, Nearly there, Not yet, Not sure, or A mix-up — with options under “Where to next”, and the choice is theirs.
Mastery is not a single line.
